School of Sanctuary

What is a School of Sanctuary?

A School of Sanctuary is a school committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all, especially those seeking sanctuary. This could be people whose lives were in danger in their home countries, those who have troubles at home or anyone looking for a space of safety.

A School of Sanctuary is a school that helps its students, staff and wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and encourages everyone to extend a warm welcome to all as equal and valued members of the school community. A School of Sanctuary is a school that is proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for all.

There are three key principles of being a School of Sanctuary:

-
Learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary.
-
Take positive action to embed the values of welcome, safety and inclusion within your school and the wider community.
-
Share your vision and achievements – be proud!
At Dovecotes Primary School we are proud to be working towards School of Sanctuary status and welcome everyone to our school as equal members of the community.

Some of the important things that we do:

-
Celebrate Refugee Week
-
Celebrate Culture Day
-
Pupils lead assemblies that highlight special celebrations like Diwali and Eid
-
Celebrate our rich diversity with events like Language Day
-
This term, look out for Parent Chatter Sessions where we will invite our community to join us for a coffee and tea morning. These sessions aim to assist families with understanding school practices, gaining knowledge about internet safety and accessing legal advice.
